Kicking off the programme below is an introduction from Philip Lewis-Ogden, President at the Yorkshire Law Society, who chaired the independent judging panel.

Smiling headshot of Head Judge Phillip Lewis-Ogden“I was honoured to be asked to chair the judging panel for this year’s awards.

“As Matthew Jones said last year, and I simply repeat:

“Talent. Celebrating talent. The celebration of Yorkshire’s talented legal practitioners and specifically certain firms and individuals who have come to the judges’ attention by being nominated for these prestigious awards. The Grammys of the legal profession here in God’s Own County.

“I can say that we, the judges on the panel this year, have had a virtually impossible task of selecting winners from the nominees, of whom there have been so many. The quality of the entries was astonishing – although why I should have thought that I am not so sure! Of course, there were going to be a plethora of quality entries! We are in Yorkshire, after all! Also, I was, I confess, taken by surprise by the number of entries and personally wish to thank not just those who were nominated, but those who took the trouble to make those nominations.

“Every firm or individual who was nominated and shortlisted should be exceptionally proud of themselves. I am proud of you. To be even nominated, let alone win, is an amazing achievement. So well done.”

Headshot of Helen Skelton

Helen Skelton has presented everything from Blue Peter to Countryfile to sport and consumer programmes. She’s competed in Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins, guest hosted The One Show, explored the nation’s history in Digging Up Britain’s Past, and examined the world’d biggest retailer in The Truth About Amazon.

After early work on local radio and TV, Helen joined the children’s news institution Newsround, and later its sport version Sportsround. As part of the Blue Peter team she took on some extraordinary challenges from the 78 mile Namibia Ultra Marathon (becoming only the second woman ever to complete the course) to walking a tightrope between Battersea Power Station’s chimneys to kayaking 2,010 km up the Amazon, alone. She also crossed 500 miles of Antarctica by bike, ski and kite.

After Blue Peter Helen presented BBC One’s Holiday Hit Squad, the show looking at whether holidays and hotels deliver what they promise, and was also part of the BBC team covering the London and Rio Olympics. Other sports coverage Helen has played a part in includes Wimbledon, the Derby, the European Swimming Championships, and the London Marathon (which she’s also run), as well as fronting BT Sport’s coverage of Women’s Super League football.
Helen returned to her rural roots as a presenter on Countryfile, and uncovered bargains and money saving tactics in Channel 4’s Supershoppers. She showed her dancing skills on the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special, and has frequently staffed Dictionary Corner on Countdown.

Entertainment

This evening’s drinks reception is accompanied by the smooth sounds of Michael Mellor. Michael has been stunning audiences with his beautiful and intricate solo guitar playing for years. His musical style combines Latin-American classical guitar with elements of jazz and flamenco. Using a loop pedal, Michael layers up guitar parts to create a rich, full sound.

Party this evening to Twotone, who seamlessly combine DJ and live drums to perform one-of-a-kind mixes! You might have already heard them on the BBC, Channel 4, and Radio 1.
